I have to say that this is not a major news item.
Decades ago (well, at least around 1995-98 :), I was actively following Java security space and researching/building advanced stuff like combining delegation certificates (SPKI) with Java's security architecture, basically replacing parts of it. Already back then, the security experts' opinion was that it is not really possible to secure Java against really serious ("government level") attackers. Also, the best research groups even had (semi-)automated tools for finding holes in JVMs, libraries etc.
