I wouldn't like to drive to the office, since listening to music and reading on the bus is so relaxing and I like walking in the city.

Same with me, listening to music and walking to work lets me see how our surroudings change on a day to day basis. Also, fresh air never killed anyone.

true, yet some americans seem to find the daily commute surprisingly zen.

I believe that being able to zen out the daily drive is the Nature's way to save you from going crazy and having a fit of traffic rage... Having moved to a smaller town a year ago, I must say I don't miss those meditations, though :-)

The problem with driving is that one is not able to read, nap, or listen to music. I'm not into listening to podcasts while driving, so I feel like I'm waisting time and polluting the planet, while the relaxation effect is not as good as on bus.

Agree, I got more or less fed up with the radio morning show with silly phone-in contests etc. However, when we lived there, the bus would have taken 2-3 times longer than driving, especially in the evening when coming back home. That felt kind of too much time for just myself...

But I think learning how to switch off your brain regularly is not a good thing. People think too little as it is.
